Unearthed photo project!

I've just found these images from my B + W photo class in 2008. I think the assignment was open, so I decided to use only objects found within my apartment to construct miniature interiors to photograph. I was amazed at how resourceful I became under the pressure of time constraints given for this assignment. I used junk I was going to toss, random containers and decorations, things from my tool box, miscellaneous materials from my kitchen, gum, clothing, cardstock, etc. It was a blast! I'm so glad I found these!

Taking a break from painting. I can only listen to so much Panda Bear before I start completely losing track of time...

Yesterday evening, I decided to go rummaging through my basement, and...what was I looking for? ...oh yes! An old yearbook. Well needless to say I never found that, but what I did end up rustling up was very exciting!!

A long time ago, I think about fifteen whole years, actually (!), my grandmother gave me some of her old jewelry. Just costume jewelry and things missing stones and whatnot. But my favorite piece of all was this owl pin. A little owl wearing glasses that move up and down. Very smart and sophisticated little wise guy. Anyway, I found him! Behold!


SO very dear! I'm excited to nestle him into my lapel so that he may irascibly judge passersby once again.

I also found a bunch of pogs, and some of my old children's books (an old, beat-up copy of The Runaway Bunny, and some too-adorable-for-words little board books that I used to LOVE). I have a whole series of these:


And then I started to reminisce. (I waste a lot of time doing that when I go rummaging through crap in my basement!) But something about the illustrations in the books made me feel nostalgic for my old closet-fort. Yes that's right, while other kids were making blanket forts with lame chairs and random furniture pushed together, I had a closet to hang out in. My closet had shelves where we kept linens and other odds & ends, and there was probably about three feet of space beneath the bottommost shelf in which I would cram all sorts of smushy pillows and blankets and stuffed animals, and I would crawl inside behind a makeshift sheet/curtain with a lamp and my Walkman and a sketch pad so I could draw comics (I used to make sequential art about my stuffed animals - once I illustrated a story I made up about my Ice-Tickle Bear going to the North Pole to visit her family). I used to stay up late at night drawing until my parents would scold me and make me go to bed.

Speaking of sequential art, I found something else that brought back a lot of memories - an orange Pochacco note-notebook that my old best friend and I used to use to communicate. You see, when we got to Middle School we didn't have a lot of classes together, so we would write notes to each other in the book and pass it off in the hallway between periods. We wrote things on the cover secure its contents, like, "Keep out! Or you are a rodent! Go away! Rodent!"

I'll share an excerpt of some song lyrics she wrote in science one day: "Oh, I love to sing! I'm singing a song! A frog on a flower is alive! OOh! You can see the atmosphere peed on a mount. Poop Esophagus! Did you eat a lemon filled with dust! Oh bust! Bust open a pinata! You! Yeah you need to learn a lesson in nail painting! Oh my goodness! Poo! LaLa!"

We were geniuses. I don't know what happened.

We used to draw hilarious pictures together of people we knew, and cartoons of weird things happening to a scary old lady custodian at our elementary school. Good times!

But now enough of this fiddle faddle! Time for me to get back to painting! A-gooodniiight.
